A tale of two cultures

A tale of two cultures

Having grown up in India and now living in Brussels with my Belgian- Greek husband, Indikon is inspired by my life here in Brussels - of living here between two cultures. It is a tale of two cultures that have influenced and inspired each other for centuries - a love story between India, my home country and Greece, the country of my husband.

Indikon celebrates similarities and the differences between these two cultures and through textiles aims to tell a story of its craft, designs, customs and people. We work with artisans based in India practicing traditional craft techniques that have been passed down and practiced for generations. The traditional crafts we work with are hand-block printing, hand spinning and hand weaving as well as Kantha embroidery. Indikon was started with aim to give a face to the craftspeople who practise these techniques, to tell the untold stories of them and their craft. In the process of doing so we quickly realised that these crafts and techniques are deeply interwoven with the cultural heritage of the land, serving as much more than just a means of production. They tell a story of the community's history, values, knowledge, and identity and its relationship with the land.

Our inspiration for making these textiles is everything Greek and its rich culture. Our designs are unique and inspired by traditional ancient greek ceramics, ancient greek monuments, its vibrant island life and its rich customs. One of the biggest inspiration for our brand has been the designs found on Ancient Greek pottery. The patterns, motifs, colours, and even forms of these ceramics often tell a story of historical events, myths, religious beliefs, daily life, or even social structures. The entire product development process starts with me hand drawing the designs here in Brussels after meticulous research
